The Saint Joseph's Altar pay homage to Jesus's foster father St. Joseph and to introduce parishioners to his many good works. The Altar is a labor of love, devotion and thanksgiving to St. St. Joseph for the abundant blessings he has bestowed on our community. St. Joseph is the patron of those in need, our ministry shares the bounty of the altar with local groups whose mission is helping others.
The tradition of the St. Joseph’s Altar can be traced to the Middle Ages when Sicilian villages suffered a devastating famine. They prayed to St. Joseph, the Protector of the Holy Family, to intercede on their behalf to God and spare them from starvation. They promised a tribute of thanksgiving to him for saving them. Thus, the St. Joseph Altar tradition began and continues to this day in Louisiana and Sicily.
