RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Catholic Religious Education is an essential part of the mission of the Church.  Jesus founded a community to be proclaimers of the gospel.  A Christian community is a witness to the message of  the kingdom of  God as well as its announcer.  Religious education becomes a live reality for those who experience the celebration of a vital Christian Community through its worship, witness, and service.  An important goal of Christian religious education is religious literacy.  At Mary,  Queen of Peace, we provide religious education for young people from four years old through high school.  Families of these children must be registered parishioners of Mary, Queen of Peace parish.

A pre-school  program for four year olds  is available on Sunday mornings during the 9:30 a.m. Mass.  The curriculum is based on the Sunday  reading and other feasts and celebrations of the liturgical year.  These classes require registration.

A Kindergarten program is available on Sunday mornings, with a session that meets during the 9:30 a.m. Mass.  The curriculum is based on guidelines set by the Archdiocese.  A test approved by the Archdiocese is used.  Registration is required for these classes.

Classes for Grades 1-6 are scheduled Tuesday and Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.  On Wednesday evenings, a 6:30 p.m. section has been scheduled to accommodate commuters.  The curriculum guidelines set by the Archdiocese are used through  a text approved by the Archdiocese.  Registration is required for these classes.  Grades 7-10 come under the  umbrella of Youth Education.  The structure of the program uses the model of Youth Ministry as its basis.  Students attend classes on Monday evening from 7:00 – 8:15 p.m.  The classes address issues that are of concern to young people today as well as the teachings of the Church.  Immediate preparation for Confirmation takes place in the Eleventh grade, with celebration of the sacrament in the Fall. Confirmation classes are held on Sunday evenings.  Registration is required  for these classes.

Sacramental Preparation:  It is the policy of the Archdiocese of New Orleans that students preparing for celebrations of sacraments must be in a religious education program one year prior to the immediate preparation.  Students attending the program for the first time are required to submit a letter  from their previous parish to confirm their attendance.  Attendance at a Catholic high school fulfills this requirement; however, all students who wish to be confirmed at Mary, Queen of Peace must attend immediate preparation classes and fulfill any requirements that are a part of that preparation.

Classes for young people who have not been baptized or who have been baptized, but who have not received some of the sacraments are available.  Students who are new to the religious education program and who have not attended religious education classes during the previous year must meet with the Director of Religious Education and may be required to participate in a class which assists them in becoming current with their present grade level.

For more information on Religious Education in the parish, please call the Office of Religious Education at 674-9794.  All students must be registered to attend classes and their families must be registered with the parish.  There is a registration fee charged for each student.  Registration is held twice a year,  in the Spring and in August.

Volunteers are also needed to help with the Religious Education Program in a variety of ways.  The program needs teachers, aides, substitutes, car line helpers, office helpers and more.  If you would like to be a part of this rewarding ministry, please call the Religious Education Office at 674-9794.
